Many vendors are selling turquoise that they have been told is stabilized when it actually is not turquoise at all. It is mostly dyed magnesite. Only 10% or less of all turquoise mined is gem quality which means it is strong enough to use as jewelry components without stabilization. This high grade turquoise is expensive and stabilization provides turquoise that is reasonably priced.
